2026 Federal Income Tax Brackets Explained

How progressive tax brackets differ from paycheck withholding, and why an annual bracket is not a flat rate on every dollar.

Brackets are progressive

Federal brackets apply different rates to portions of taxable income. Moving into a higher bracket does not make all of your income subject to that higher rate.

Withholding is a payroll process

Employers use IRS withholding tables and the information on Form W-4 to estimate federal income tax during the year. Withholding can differ from final liability because credits, deductions, other income, and annual filing details are settled on a tax return.

Use the calculator as a planning view

Use the QuickEstimators paycheck calculator to compare federal withholding, FICA, state treatment, and selected deductions for the same pay frequency and gross pay. Review the result with the paycheck calculator and treat it as a planning estimate rather than a filing result.
