Quick answer

How much is a salary per hour?

Your hourly equivalent depends on your annual salary, paid weeks, and normal weekly hours. With a standard 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks, divide your annual salary by 2,080 hours. For example, $50,000 per year is about $24.04 per hour, while $60,000 per year is about $28.85 per hour.

How to convert salary to hourly pay

Converting a salary to an hourly rate is a simple two-step calculation. First divide your annual gross salary by the number of paid weeks in the year. Then divide that weekly amount by the number of hours you normally work each week.

Salary to hourly formula

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ Paid weeks ÷ Hours per week

For a 40-hour schedule with 52 paid weeks, the calculation uses 2,080 hours per year.

Salary to hourly examples

The examples below assume 40 hours per week and 52 paid weeks per year. They show gross compensation before taxes and other deductions.

$50,000 salary

$24.04/hr

$50,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = approximately $24.04 per hour.

$60,000 salary

$28.85/hr

$60,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = approximately $28.85 per hour.

How this salary to hourly calculator works

Start with your annual gross salary. The calculator divides it by your paid weeks to estimate weekly gross pay, then divides that weekly amount by your weekly hours to calculate the hourly equivalent.

01

02

Why paid weeks matter

Paid weeks affect the hourly equivalent because the same annual salary can represent a different weekly amount depending on how many weeks you are paid.

Using 52 paid weeks assumes the annual salary covers the full year. If you receive the same annual salary over fewer paid weeks, the weekly and hourly equivalent will be higher.

Example

A $52,000 salary paid over 52 weeks is $1,000 per paid week. If the same $52,000 were paid over 50 weeks, the weekly equivalent would be $1,040 before considering the weekly hours.

Salary vs. hourly pay

Salary is generally expressed as an annual amount, while hourly compensation is expressed as an amount paid for each hour of work. Converting a salary to an hourly equivalent gives you a common unit for comparing compensation and work schedules.

This calculation is a mathematical comparison. It does not by itself determine employment classification, overtime eligibility, benefits, paid time off, or what an employer is legally required to pay.

What about overtime?

A salary-to-hourly conversion is not automatically the same as the legally determined regular rate used for every overtime situation. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees generally receive overtime at not less than one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, subject to applicable exemptions and rules.

Whether a salaried employee is exempt from overtime can depend on the employee's duties, pay basis, and other requirements. For the rules that apply to a particular employment situation, refer to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Gross salary vs. take-home pay

This calculator uses gross salary, which is the amount before payroll taxes and other deductions. Your actual take-home pay can be lower after taxes, Social Security, Medicare, insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions.

Salary to hourly calculation methodology

Quick Estimators uses the schedule you enter instead of assuming that every worker has the same number of hours or paid weeks. The calculation starts with annual gross salary, divides it by paid weeks, and then divides the weekly amount by hours worked per week.

Step 1: Annual salary ÷ paid weeks = estimated weekly gross pay.

Step 2: Estimated weekly pay ÷ hours per week = estimated hourly equivalent.

Example: $50,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = approximately $24.04 per hour.

Does salary to hourly use 52 weeks?

The calculator uses the number of paid weeks you enter. If your salary covers 52 paid weeks, use 52. If you have unpaid weeks, enter the number of weeks you are actually paid so the hourly equivalent reflects that schedule.

Does this calculator calculate take-home pay?

No. This calculator converts gross annual salary into an hourly equivalent. It does not subtract federal or state income taxes, Social Security, Medicare, insurance, retirement contributions, or other deductions.

Can I use this calculator for a different number of hours per week?

Yes. Enter your typical weekly hours. The calculator divides annual salary by paid weeks and then by those weekly hours, so the hourly equivalent changes when your work schedule changes.
