Understanding Your 2026 W-4 and Paystub
A plain-language guide to the W-4 fields that shape federal withholding and the numbers you see on each paystub.
Start with gross pay
Gross pay is the amount earned before withholding and deductions. Compare the pay period, rate, hours, and any bonuses with your offer or time records before reviewing taxes.
Read the W-4 inputs
Filing status, multiple-job adjustments, credits for dependents, and other adjustments change federal withholding. The W-4 is an instruction for withholding, not a prediction of your final tax bill.
Connect the paystub to an estimate
Use the QuickEstimators paycheck calculator to compare federal withholding, FICA, state treatment, and selected deductions for the same pay frequency and gross pay. Employer payroll systems may apply additional benefits or local rules.
